What medications are available for anxiety and depression?

We prescribe the safest medications that are considered first-line in the treatment of anxiety and depression. They include SSRIs (such as Zoloft and Lexapro), SNRIs (such as Cymbalta, Wellbutrin, and Buspar). To ensure absolute safety, we avoid any medications with potentially serious side effects that require blood work and an ECG. We categorically do not prescribe any controlled substances or benzodiazepines, such as Xanax and Ativan. While we do recognize their benefit, these medications do carry a significant potential for abuse. No matter the medication prescribed, our policy is to start low and go slow. We start with the lowest dose and adjust slowly. In combination with our bi-weekly follow ups, this allows us to avoid side effects outright or catch them before they become serious.
